A two-day American-Croatian forum is being held in Zagreb, organized by the US Embassy on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations. The panel on "Security and Foreign Policy" was held today.

Markić: The United States knew exactly when the war in Ukraine would start and they shared that with us

“The American intelligence community knew seven days before the invasion of Ukraine when the Russians would attack Ukraine, and they shared that with Croatia,” said the director of the Security Intelligence Agency (SOA) Daniel Markić at the forum.

Markić said the possibility of a Russian invasion of Ukraine was discussed in Munich in February, but that "no one expected this conflict" except the United States.

Referring to the superiority of American intelligence, Markić pointed out that "one officer of the American intelligence service not only said that it would happen, but also when".

“The United States decided to use its intelligence community, its diplomacy, even the media, so that would all be aware of that. For some of us, it was hard to believe,” Markić said, adding that the case, among other things, "proves the benefits of cooperation (with the United States) for us."

Markić participated in the Security and Foreign Policy panel with Croatian Interior Minister Davor Božinović, Croatian National Security Adviser Dragan Lozančić, Richard W. Downing, Assistant US Attorney General, and Lauren Speranz, Director of the Transatlantic Defense and Security Program at the Center for European Policy Analysis, a Washington think tank.

“The civic concept for Bosnia and Herzegovina can only be discussed after it becomes a member of the European Union, and until then the framework is the Dayton Accords,” said Gabriel Escobar, the US government's special envoy for the Western Balkans, on Tuesday.
