Zagreb marked the 31st anniversary of a deadly cluster bomb attack that killed seven people and wounded around 200.

Rebel Serb forces launched rockets on the capital on May 2 and 3, 1995, in retaliation for the Croatian Army’s Operation Flash offensive.

The attack deliberately targeted civilians, striking several locations in the city center, including the Croatian National Theatre, Zrinjevac Park, and Klaićeva Children’s Hospital. Sisak, Karlovac, and Jastrebarsko were also hit.

A commemoration was held Saturday at May Victims Square, named in honor of those killed in the attack.

“We all know what happened, how many people died and how many were wounded. It was ugly, bloody, and terrible,” said Biserka Markioli, who was seriously injured in the attack.

“We remember this tragic event to ensure the names of those killed, and the wounds of those injured, serve as a reminder of what happened — so that the horrors of war never happen again in our city,” said Zagreb Mayor Tomislav Tomašević.
