Krunoslav Fehir was released on Wednesday by Serbian authorities after a court in Belgrade found him guilty of war crimes committed against Serbs in Croatia in 1991.
He received a six-month sentence, but the court credited the time he had already spent in detention toward that sentence.
“I was expecting it, but I wasn’t sure,” Fehir said shortly after his release.
Fehir was 16 during the war and served in a unit led by Branimir Glavaš. He later testified against Glavaš, who was convicted of war crimes by Croatian courts. Fehir was found guilty by the court in Belgrade of being a member of Glavaš’s unit. His age and testimony against Glavaš were taken into account as mitigating circumstances.
Serbian authorities arrested Fehir at the border last June after indicting him on war crimes charges. He has now been banned from entering Serbia for one year.
Asked whether he would ever return, Fehir replied, “I think Serbia has seen the last of me — forever.”
