Zagreb’s historic funicular—the city’s oldest form of public transport and officially the shortest of its kind in the world—is back in service following its first major overhaul in more than 50 years.

Zagreb Mayor Tomislav Tomašević said it is one of the rare funiculars that has operated for over 130 years without a single accident. “To ensure it remains that way, a complete renovation was necessary,” he said, referring to the 16-month, €9 million project.

Minister of Regional Development and EU Funds Nataša Mikuš Žigman said she was pleased that available EU funds, allocated by the government and the ministry through the Territorial Investment Instrument, were used to support the revitalisation of this important facility.

The journey between Zagreb’s Lower and Upper Town takes 64 seconds.
