The State Inspectorate reported that its Environmental Protection Inspectorate is conducting supervision in the Split shipyard over the work on removing asbestos panels from the ship "Moby Drea", with Brodosplit being warned that asbestos waste cannot be disposed of in Croatia.
Dismantling of asbestos panels to begin soon
The State Inspectorate’s Environmental Protection Inspectorate is conducting supervision at the Brodograđevna industrija Split shipyard, in connection with the planned removal of asbestos-containing panels from the ship "Moby Drea", which sails under the Italian flag, announced the inspectorate.
During the supervision so far, it has been determined that the process of dismantling asbestos panels has not yet begun, but that work is currently being carried out on the ship to relocate ship furniture, according to the inspectorate.
Asbestos panels are hazardous waste
Regarding the planned dismantling of asbestos-containing panels, the Environmental Protection Inspectorate has warned the legal entity that the hazardous asbestos waste that will be generated by this process cannot be disposed of in Croatia, in accordance with the Waste Management Act, and the Environmental Protection Inspectorate will also inform the owner of the ship "Moby Drea" about this.
“Asbestos-containing panels that are planned to be removed by dismantling from the ship "Moby Drea" are considered hazardous waste that is subject to a prior notification procedure and obtaining approval from the competent authority for the implementation of Regulation (EC) No. 1013/2006 on shipments of waste. The competent inspections of the State Inspectorate continue with supervisory activities with the aim of preserving public health, protecting the environment and protecting the interests of the Republic of Croatia," said the statement.
'Healthy Split' calls for protests
The civic initiative Healthy Split continues to insist that the disputed ship leave Split, so they are once again calling on citizens to protest on Monday, starting at 11 a.m. on Matejuška.
A new press conference has been announced for Friday at Sustipan, where the public will be informed a little better about the details of the third protest and new information about the asbestos panel case.
