Deputy Prime Minister tours earthquake reconstruction sites in the center of Zagreb

Croatia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Construction, Physical Planning and State Property Minister visited post-earthquake reconstruction sites in the City of Zagreb and the wider area on Monday.

Among the buildings undergoing works is his own ministry, as the building's load-bearing structure was damaged in the 5.3 magnitude earthquake that hit the Croatian capital on March 22nd of 2020. The structural reinforcement is scheduled to be completed by the end of next year. Deputy Prime Minister and Construction, Physical Planning and State Property Minister Branko Bačić also visited two construction sites in the city center, the first dealing with two buildings in Palmotićeva Street undergoing structural reconstruction at a cost of one million and eight hundred thousand euros, and the second in Strossmayer Square, where half a million euros have been secured for renovations. Here's what he told reporters about the tempo of the overall earthquake reconstruction effort: “In the Zagreb area alone there are two hundred and twenty buildings, some family houses and some larger residential structures, being worked on. What lies ahead of us now is a renewed momentum here in the city center with the structural reinforcing of larger residential buildings. I a few days' time we will begin a few new construction sites, while other residential buildings in Zagreb are already in the procurement phase of their public tenders.”

Minister Bačić is also in charge of the earthquake reconstruction effort in Sisak-Moslavina County, which was hit by 6.4 magnitude earthquake on December 29th 2020, and has made regular visits to construction sites in the county in recent months.
