The Tanzanian cargo ship Deala ran aground off the coast of the Istrian peninsula in April of last year, after the vessel carrying 15 crew members of Egyptian nationality encountered difficulties. No crew members were injured during the event and no reports of environmental pollution were recorded.

The cargo ship "Deala", which ran aground off the coast of the Istrian peninsula last April, has been towed to a floating dock. For the head of the Marčana Municipality Predrag Pliško, this is welcome but long-awaited news: "We were of the opinion that this should have been done long ago, before the peak tourist season. But speaking as someone involved in operational matters, when you get an up close view of the situation you realize that it's impossible to foresee every possible complication. So, we're happy that it's finally being resolved now."

The Deala, became stranded at the entrance to Raša Port on the morning of Tuesday, April 16th 2024. Approximately half an hour before the incident, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) received a call for assistance from a tugboat, prompted by strong winds and fears that the vessel might run aground.

The Deala, measuring 79 meters in length and 13 meters in width, is registered under the Tanzanian flag, but is owned and operated by Deala Shipping Co., Ltd., based in Istanbul. Once secured to the dock the vessel will be towed to a shipyard in Turkey. Dolores Brenko Škerjanc from the Pula Port Authority: "The first phase has been completed, now we are moving on to the second phase, securing it, once it is secured to the floating dock, then it will set off by tugboat to Turkey."
