The annual session of the Croatian World Congress (CWC), an organization that brings together volunteers and organizations of Croats around the world, began in Zagreb. One of the most important projects of the CWC is the Croatian World Games, which will be held in Mostar in 2027, it was announced at the opening of the session of the CWC Central Board.
The CWC also signed an agreement with the Croatian Studies Center on the exchange of students from the Republic of Croatia and the diaspora. The new director of the Croatian Heritage Foundation (CHF), Zdeslav Milas, emphasized that he will strongly support all projects of the Congress related to learning the Croatian language and connecting young people from all over the world.
New CWC Commissioner for the USA
The new director of the CWC America is Srećko Mavrek from New York, a prominent journalist, educator and social activist.
The Executive Board of the Croatian World Congress, at its session held on March 11, 2025, decided to appoint Mr. Srećko Mavrek as the new CWC Commissioner for the United States of America. This decision was made in the context of the need to reactivate the status and work of the Croatian World Congress in the USA, since the previously appointed commissioner had not performed the assigned tasks in the past ten years, which led to a complete standstill in the activities and institutional status of the Croatian World Congress in that country, the CWC explained.
Years of effort in connecting emigrants
Srećko Mavrek is known for his tireless engagement in connecting the Croatian diaspora with the homeland, according to the CWC. In addition to his professional activities, he actively cultivates Croatian musical heritage as a singer in the Astoria klapa from New York, known for his performances at prestigious events, including a performance of the American anthem at Madison Square Garden as part of Croatian Heritage Day. Mavrek is an academic and internationally recognized expert in the field of education, who has taught at universities in Europe and the United States during his career, was a representative in the United Nations Department of Global Communications, and has received numerous awards for his contributions to the community and education. For his dedicated work in education and the community, Professor Mavrek was awarded the "Hostos Community College Excellence in Teaching Award" for 2024 and the special recognition "Večernjakova domovnica" for 2023 - a prestigious award that the Večernji list newspaper and Fenix-magazine award to the most prominent Croatians abroad for their contribution to preserving Croatian identity and promoting Croatia's reputation in the world.
