Friends, fans, and members of Croatia's music community gathered at Lisinski Concert Hall in Zagreb on Thursday to say a final farewell to jazz pianist Matija Dedić, who passed away earlier this week at the age of 52.
Dedić was born into Croatian music royalty, the son of two highly respected performers, Arsen Dedić and Gabi Novak. He was deeply admired by his colleagues, many of whom expressed profound sadness over his passing.
"He was a wonderful man, born into a musical family. Of course he became an artist. He was born with musical talent. He could play any instrument, his way. That's high art!" said jazz singer Zdenka Kovačićek.
"I am terribly sad he is no longer with us. He was the best jazz musician in this part of the world and that was clear to everyone who heard him play or worked with him. These are not just nice words, it's the truth,” said pop star Nina Badrić.
On behalf of the Croatian Government, Minister of Culture and Media Nina Obuljen Koržinek addressed the gathering, highlighting Matija's contribution to the Croatian and European jazz scene, as well as his exceptional human warmth and dedication to art.
Matija's childhood friend Olja Runjić struck an emotional chord as she shared a personal story of their close friendship as did musician and longtime friend Gibonni in his speech. Both emphasized Matija's sincerity, tenderness, and dedication to family and art.
