With the matches in groups A and C over, it is clear that Croatia would qualify for the EURO 2020 Round of 16 with any victory against Scotland and regardless of the outcome of the England v. Czech Republic match.

If Croatia wins, the only question is from which place, second or third, they would advance to the last 16. The only position that is unattainable for Croatia is first place in Group D.

If England defeats the Czech Republic, Croatia could be second, but it is the goal difference between Croatia and the Czechs that would determine the final group position of the teams. Coach Zlatko Dalić’s team is -1 and the Czechs are +2.

If the Czechs pick up one point or a win, the three points Croatia would pick up with a win over Scotland would put them in third position. Of six third-placed teams in the group stage, four will qualify for the Round of 16. The good news is that any kind of victory will do for Croatia to make it through because they would have more points than Switzerland, which is third in Group A, and Ukraine, which is third in Group C.

Switzerland finished the group stage with four points and a -1 goal differential, while Ukraine has three points and also a -1 goal differential. A win would give Croatia four points and at least 0 goal difference. However, Croatia’s fate depends on whether they can pull of a win on Tuesday night against the Scots because a loss would mean an early ticket home.
