Luka Modrić received a special surprise at a video conference on Monday in Opatija when friends, teammates and family members appeared in the role of reporters, asking the Croatian football legend all kinds of questions about the game and his future plans.

It has been an emotional few days for national team captain Luka Modrić, who became Croatia's most capped player of all time when he started against Cyprus on Saturday, making his 135th appearance for the national team and breaking the previous record held by Dario Srna. The Croatian Football Federation surprised Luka by scheduling a video news conference and not telling him the questions would be coming from his friends, teammates and even his wife, who asked him when he planned to retire.

"I don't know, love! You know how much this means to me, how happy it makes me to play for the national team. You'll have to be patient for a while longer to get your answer," he replied, laughing at the question from Vanja Modrić, with whom he has three children.

Luka's father, Stipe Modrić, asked him which one of all the goals he has scored for the national team was his favorite.

“The one against Argentina, because of all that we had done at the World Cup in Russia and because of the significance of the game. Of course, I am proud of all my goals for Croatia, but this one is more special than the others,” Modrić said.

Dario Srna asked what had been his most difficult moment of his international career.

“The most difficult moment? Definitely the game against Turkey in the 2008 Euro quarterfinals in Vienna. The defeat hit us hard, really hard. You remember our reactions in the locker room and how hard we took it. Whatever happened after that, that defeat was the hardest,” Modrić said.

Croatia will play their third 2022 World Cup qualifier on Tuesday in Rijeka against Malta. Coach Zlatko Dalić has said that he plans to switch-up his starters for the match, resting some of his key players, Modrić among them.
