The Croatian national football team beat Russia 1:nil in Split on Sunday, in the final game of the group stage of qualifications for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Play was hampered by driving rain, leaving the pitch a soggy mess.

The lone goal was scored in the 81st minute of play, with an own goal by Russian defender Fyodor Kudryashov. With the win Croatia finishes first in Group "H" 23 points, seven wins, 2 draws and one loss. Coach Zlatko Dalić and his team, led by veteran midfielder and team captain Luka Modrić, have now officially booked their ticket for Qatar next year. Russia finished second in the group and will now advance to a second round play-off to fight for a spot in World Cup 2022.

In the other Group “H” games Slovakia hammered Malta 6:nil in Malta, while Slovenia edged Cyprus 2:1 in Ljubljana. This means that Slovakia and Slovenia are 3rd and 4th respectively in Group “H” with 14 points each, while Cyprus and Malta are 5th and 6th with five points each.
