US President Joe Biden and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen have announced a partnership to reduce Europe's reliance on Russian oil and gas.

The EU currently obtains 40% of its natural gas supply from Russia, a factor that has complicated efforts to impose sanctions on Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine. Biden and von der Leyen announced a joint task force that would address the issue. Speaking to the press after meeting in Brussels on Friday, Biden said Russia was using its supply of oil and gas to "coerce and manipulate its neighbors". Biden promised the US would help the EU meet its energy needs for the next two winters and beyond.

“The United States, together with our international partners, they’re going to — we’re going to work to ensure an additional 15 — one-five — 15 billion cubic meters of liquefied natural gas — LNG — for Europe this year. And as the EU works to discontinue buying Russian gas well before 2030, it will also work to ensure additional EU market demand for 50 billion cubic meters of LNG from the United States annually by 2030,” Biden said.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Biden’s presence at the NATO, G7, and EU summits sent a very powerful message to the world.

"The transatlantic partnership stands stronger and more united than ever. And we are determined to stand up against Russia's brutal war. This war will be a strategic failure for Putin,” said von der Leyen.

She said the four successive waves of sanctions against Russia were working and showed that "when we act together, we're stronger and we really can make a difference."

Later on Friday, Biden arrived in Poland, which has taken in more than 2 million Ukrainian refugees.
