Prime Minister Andrej Plenković discussed the energy crisis in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine with President Nicos Anastasiades while on official visit to Cyprus.

Cyprus has in recent years has discovered significant offshore gas deposits, said the Cypriot president, which could help Europe's energy diversification; while Plenković underlined that the LNG terminal on the island of Krk would have a significant role in achieving Europe's energy security.

"Thought is being given currently to increasing its capacity and not just for Croatia but for the needs of countries in Central Europe. Croatia can become an energy hub in the north Adriatic for gas and oil. Europe has to find a new, long-term sustainable alternative to Russia's energy products at an affordable price," he said.

"We are two Mediterranean countries not far from each other, we share the Mediterranean and I believe there is a lot of room for expanding cooperation," said the prime minister.

"I think there is a lot of room to invest in the areas we have outlined whether it is the petrochemical and electrical energy industries, IT sector, pharmaceutical industry and financial and digital cooperation. These are the first points of our agenda where these relations can be enriched. And I will make sure our ministries follow up on this political visit in order to increase the volume of our trade," he added.

Upon arriving in Cyprus late on Tuesday evening, the two leaders discussed the 30 years of bilateral relations between Croatia and Cyprus.

President Anastasiades said the visit marked the first by a Croatian prime minister to the island nation.

"During these thirty years we have enjoyed a continued deepening and expansion of our relationship as evident by the important agreements that our countries have concluded in a wide range of areas which today form the institutional framework and the backbone of our bilateral relations," said Anastasiades.
