President Zoran Milanović said on Thursday that political parites on the left in Croatian and across the EU have failed the "stress test of fundamental human freedoms" with regard to the coronavirus pandemic.

The president said left-leaning parties were no longer advocating for basic human freedoms, saying that everyone is afraid to stand up against increasingly oppressive anti-pandemic measures. This, he said, was about the loss of basic rights - which is very dangerous.

Milanović, the former prime minister and leader of the Social Democratic Party, said he had expected those on the left to be the most vocal opponents of such measures.

Conformism and fear is the enemy of politics, said Milanović. And while he believes the Most party referendum campaign was being promoted in a wrong way, he did agree that only Croatian parliament has the ability to restrict basic human freedoms - a fact that was being brutally ignored.
