Police in Šibenik-Knin County arrested a 54-year-old arsonist on Sunday morning on charges of starting a fire near Kistanja, as well as two other fires in the same area last month.

An investigation confirmed that the suspect used a lighter and newspaper to set fire to dry grass near houses in the village of Modrino selo at 4:30 am on Saturday. Thanks to a quick reaction from local firefighters, the blaze, which burned roughly six hectares, was successfully put out.

Police spokesman Šime Pavić confirmed that the same suspect lit two smaller fires in the same area on 28 June that were quickly extinguished.

Penalties for arson include a fine of between 15,000 and 150,000 kuna and up to six months in jail.

Wildfires are a major problem in Croatia during the summer months and cause tremendous damage.

Fire Chief Slavko Tucaković said the penalties were far too lenient and called for harsher penalties including longer jail sentences and heftier fines.
