The 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide was marked with a somber commemoration on Friday.

On July 11th, 1995, Bosnian Serb forces overran the Bosniak enclave, killing an estimated 8,000 men and boys.

Several world leaders, including Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, attended the ceremony in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

"Srebrenica is more than a place of suffering; it serves as a warning," said Plenković in his speech to those in attendance.

"Here, evil reached its extreme genocidal form. International mechanisms fell short, but also the basic principles of humanity. As we again witness wars, human suffering, and the destruction of the legal order around the world; we better understand the fragility and preciousness of peace. Srebrenica obliges us to be the guardians of the truth, so that crimes never remain unpunished and that not a single victim is forgotten," added the prime minister.

President Zoran Milanović offered his condolences to the families of the victims of the worst massacre in Europe since the Second World War in a message posted on his official Facebook page.

"It is the responsibility of all of us to preserve the lasting memory of the victims of this brutal and unimaginable crime, and for the truth about Srebrenica to be accepted so that the victims may rest in peace. And while the memory of Srebrenica was permanently enshrined by a resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly last year; unfortunately, the international community is not doing enough to prevent the recurrence of other terrible crimes."
