Government's social partners say they are happy with the package of measures, noting that they are generous and comprehensive, especially in terms of helping the most vulnerable members of society.

And while in a rare show of unity both union leads and the Croatian Employers’ Association have lauded the anti-inflation measures as abundant and all-encompassing, opposition politicians say that not only are the measures far too late in coming, they will be useless without mechanisms to regulate profit margins. Most opposition politicians noted that previous experience has shown that retail chains and distributors have always taken advantage of such measures, simply turning the lower tax rate into excess profit for themselves.

For his part Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Zdravko Marić said that he is hopeful that the market will regulate this kind of behavior: “Government will monitor and influence the situation through various public activities, so that we can keep this kind of malpractice to a minimum.”

Davor Bernardić of the Social Democrats bench in Parliament said however, that it would have been better if government had simply raised workers net income by reducing the taxable portion of their salaries.
