The government adopted a conclusion on the "I choose Croatia" scheme designed to motivate citizens living abroad to return to Croatia by offering financial incentives to start a business and to populate less-developed areas of the country.

Under the "I choose Croatia" initiative, those returning to Croatia from the European Economic Area and Switzerland and starting a business would receive an additional 50,000 kuna. There are also additional incentives for starting a business in rural areas.

That is a maximum 200,000 kuna for those who return to Croatia, apply for the scheme and have their business plan approved by the Croatian Employment Service (HZZ), said Labour, Pension System, Family, and Social Policy Minister Josip Aladrović.

"This measure aims to encourage migration within Croatia and migration to Croatia from countries within the European Economic Area. In this way, we are sending a strong message to all those citizens who wish to open a business in Croatia, regardless if they currently live in Croatia or the European Economic Area," added the minister.

More than one-billion kunas has been set aside for the initiative.
