The Croatian Minister of Defense resigned after two members of the Croatian Air Force were killed in the crash of an Air Force trainer plane near the coastal city of Zadar.

Former Defense Minister Damir Krstičević announced on Facebook on Friday that he had resigned as minister due to a sense of responsibility and military honor. "I am first and foremost a general who served throughout the Homeland War and I have always, both in times of war and in times of peace, taken responsibility and care for my people," Krstičević wrote.

Krstičević went on to thank all of the members of the Croatian Armed Forces and employees of the Defense Ministry for their dedicated work over the past four years. He called on them to continue to work on strengthening the Croatian Army and continue to build the future on the foundations of the Homeland War. “Strengthening the Croatian Army is your permanent mission and that mission has no alternative,” he said.

And while Prime Minister Andrej Plenković accepted his resignation, he made it clear that he did not believe that Krstičević was responsible for the crash. Media are speculating that Tomislav Ivić, the current State Secretary within the Defense Ministry, will replace Krstičević as Defense Minister.
