The Croatia Foreign and European Affairs Minister visited Sofia on Tuesday, where he participated in a Conference on the Future of Europe, co-organized by Croatia, Bulgaria and the European Commission.

The focus of discussion at the Conference on the Future of Europe was on the negative demographic trend in Europe. With one-fifth of Europeans today aged around 65, there are only slightly more than two workers per pensioner in the Union. Forecast say that by 2070 that number will drop 1.7. In her address European Commission Vice President and Commissioner for Democracy and Demography, Dubravka Šuica, said that Europe needs to adapt if it wants to survive: "We want to understand better the main drivers of demographic change, and its impact on the union's working age population, public spending and ultimately the European Union's position in the world."

The European Commission’s interactive Demographic Atlas of Europe was also presented at the conference. The Atlas serves as a digital tool for monitoring demographic changes, which have a strong impact on the entire Union, including Croatia. For his part Croatia Foreign and European Affairs Minister Gordan Grlić Radman called for immediate action: "Demographic changes are real. They affect our societies, our economy, our finances, our educations systems, our way of life. We need to address it, and we need to do it now."

Minister Grlić Radman also met bilaterally with his Bulgarian counterpart, Svetlan Stoev, Bulgarian Prime Minister Stefan Yanev and Bulgarian President Rumen Radev. The focus of their talks was on common goals such as joining the Schengen Border Area and the Eurozone, as well as strengthening bilateral co-operation between the two countries.

"We discussed the possibilities of further strengthening cooperation in multilateral and European formats, as well as greater economic cooperation and investment," Grlić Radman concluded.
