Gen. Kundid nominated for Chief of the General Staff of the Croatian Armed Forces

At Thursday’s cabinet session Government forwarded to parliament's Defense Committee the nomination for General Tihomir Kundid to be named the new Chief of General Staff of the Croatian Armed Forces.

Speaking at today’s cabinet session Prime Minister Andrej Plenković said that General Tihomir Kundid was a veteran of the Homeland War, the current commander of the Croatian Army, and a well-respected officer with a proven track record: "In question is the commander of the Croatian Army whose contribution we value and respect, and that is why we will propose his candidacy. And on the basis of talks led by Defense Minister Anušić we expect the President to accept government's proposal that will be delivered in the coming period. As for the naming of the director of the Security and intelligence Agency, as far as we're concerned it will be the current director Mr. Danijel Markić."

And while President Zoran Milanović has welcomed the decision to appoint General Kundid, whom he nominated himself, the Office of the President released a statement today noting that there is no agreement on the appointment of the director of the Security and Intelligence Agency.

EXCERPT FROM A STATEMENT ISSUED BY THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT:

"We inform the public that at the moment there is no agreement regarding the appointment of the director of the Security and Intelligence Agency (SOA). The position of the President of the Republic is that before any discussion about the naming of the SOA director, a detailed analysis of the (in) action of SOA when appointing Ivan Turudić to the position of Chief State Prosecutor must be conducted, and if necessary, implement changes both in SOA's internal organization, as well as changes in the legal framework for the Agency's actions."
