The Supreme Court has published on Thursday the final verdict in the Fimi Media corruption case, reducing the prison sentence of former prime minister Ivo Sanader by one year.

Under the ruling, the sentence of former prime minister and HDZ leader, Ivo Sanader, has been reduced from 8 years in prison to 7 because of his poor health. The HDZ must pay 3.5 million kuna in fines and return 14 million kuna to the state. Sanader was convicted of corruption in 2020 and sentenced to eight years in jail for funneling millions in state money through a marketing agency for personal gain and to finance the HDZ.

Responding to the news, Prime Minister Plenković told a press conference that the party would pay the money but would not accept responsibility for the actions of the previous leadership.

“As legalists, we accept the verdict. We are sorry that not all the elements submitted by our lawyers on appeal were taken into consideration,” said Andrej Plenković.
