The European Union is celebrating Europe Day on this day, May 9th, the 71st anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, the document which proposed the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community, the forerunner to the European Union.

According to EU institutions, Europe Day intends to "celebrate peace, solidarity, diversity and unity in Europe," .

Prime Minister Andrej Plenković on Sunday forwarded a message on the occasion of Europe Day, calling on citizens to continue their commitment to peace, social justice, and economic development.

Plenković underscored that Europe Day, this year, was being marked during the biggest global challenge since the Second World War.

As the youngest member state, the prime minister says Croatia continues to prove itself to be a responsible and engaged member. The country knows how to protect its national interests and use the Union's mechanisms for its own economic development, social inclusion, and to garner the best possible life for its citizens.

Foreign and European Affairs Minister Gordan Grlić Radman had this to say from Strasbourg on Sunday on the visionary document that led to the creation of the European Union.

"On this day we remember those visionaries, the people who helped to found the European Union. Seventy years ago, the Schuman Declaration, the document which led to the European Coal and Steel Community, was very visionary and anticipated the further integration of other countries based on peace, stability, the rule of law, and human rights," said the minister.
