European Parliament President David Sassoli died early this morning at the oncology hospital in Aviano, Italy.

Sassoli had been in hospital since December 26th, because of a serious complication due to a dysfunction of his immune system.

Sassoli, 65, had been president of the 705-seat parliament since 2019. His term was due to end this month and he was not expected to seek a second one.

Due to illness, he was unable to chair the Strasbourg-based parliament in recent weeks and missed the European Commission's annual state of the union event in September.

Prime Minister Andrej Plenković stated on Tuesday that the death of the European Parliament President was a huge loss for the European Union and Italy. He also expressed his condolence to Sassoli's family and to the European Parliament.

Plenković wrote on social media that Sassoli was a great friend of Croatia and had made a strong contribution to strengthening European democracy.
