In response to Israeli Ambassador Gary Koren, who said Croatia should sever ties with Tehran and conduct a security check on the staff of the Iranian embassy in Zagreb, Croatian politicians reminded the ambassador that Croatia is a sovereign state that will make its own decisions.

Commenting on Israeli Ambassador to Croatia Gary Koren’s call for Croatia to cut diplomatic relations with Iran and to investigate the Iranian embassy in Zagreb, HDZ Member of European Parliament Davor Ivo Stier said these decisions id needed would be made by Croatia: “We have our agencies that monitor these things. Obviously, it is important for Croatia to maintain open channels of communication, and we've had them up until now with Iran as well. Cutting ties is a judgement call that we will make if deemed necessary, but I don't see that this is something that needs to be decided on right now.”

His sentiments were echoed by SDP official Joško Klisović: “Just as with Mr. Stier I believe that who Croatia establishes and cuts-off diplomatic ties with is a sovereign decision of the Republic of Croatia.”

President Zoran Milanović has also apparently reacted to the ambassador’s seemingly arrogant statement, and has reportedly summoned Koren to the Office of the President this evening.
