Croatia has officially started negotiations on joining the OECD. This was confirmed today ahead of the start of an international political forum in Dubrovnik on Friday evening.

Earlier today Prime Minister Andrej Plenković and Foreign and European Affairs Minister Gordan Grlić Radman received the deputy secretary general of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, Ulrik Vestergaard Knudsen. Here's what Minister Grlić Radman had to say after their meeting: “This is an historic moment for us, an important time for Croatia, because of the fact that after joining the Schengen Border Area and the Eurozone, this will truly be the cherry on top! There isn't a single important organization left of which Croatia is not a member. With this membership, we will meet all of our foreign policy goals in terms of joining the most important international organizations.”

For his part, the Deputy Secretary General said that while there is no fixed timeline for Croatia's accession: “There is no fixed timeline for this, we've discussed this a number of times also with the prime minister. We understand your sense of urgency, it will be important, I think, to provide quality answers to all of the committees, and if we want to go fast, if we want to achieve speed, it'll have to be through quality. And we feel certain that we're going to leave Zagreb with the impression that you are ready, all engines firing to get the accession process going. And I can promise you the same on our side.”

Established in 1961, the OECD has 38 member states, and its goals are to increase living standards and to stimulate economic growth and global trade.
