Croatian Parliament’s Credentials and Privileges Commission has unanimously lifted immunity and approved the initiation of criminal proceedings and pre-trial detention for Social Democratic party MP Stjepan Kovač, former mayor of Čakovec.

The request for lifting Stjepan Kovač's immunity and deprivation of liberty was sent by the State Attorney's Office of the Republic of Croatia on suspicion that he had committed the criminal offense of trading in influence.

Kovac is suspected of staging death threats in the run-up to the May local elections to find out the identity of the person behind the stjepankotac website.

Kovač can now be arrested and investigators can search his home and other premises. According to usual practice, the Credentials and Privileges Commission lifts the immunity of a member of parliament whenever requested by the State Attorney's Office.

In this morning's action by police and the Office for Prevention of Corruption and Organized Crime in the area of Međimurje, several people were arrested on suspicion of having committed corrupt criminal acts, including Međimurje County Prefect Matija Posavec.

According to unofficial information, Posavec is suspected of an act not related to Kovač, in which he received 10,000 kuna for employment in the Međimurje County Road Administration.
