The head of Međimurje County and leader of the county branch of the HNS, Matija Posavec, announced on Tuesday that he was resigning from the party he has been a member of for the past fifteen years.

Posavec noted a sharp difference in views and plans for the future as the reasons for his departure from the HNS, which is, at the same time, a junior partner in the current government's ruling coalition.

"Realising where things are going, I have decided to leave after months of attempts and warnings that things should go in a different direction, that we should introduce new values into Croatian politics, but there was not enough will for that. I gave it a lot of chances, but this is not the political path I think both Međimurje and Croatia should follow," said Posavec.

He said that two years ago he was strongly opposed to the HNS entering into a coalition with the HDZ, but had decided to stay and attempt to change things from within.

"I was trying for these two years. Things came to a head at the European Parliament election after which I made it clear in public that we have to build a new party on a new political paradigm, that we need to change both our leadership and our direction if we want a better future. Unfortunately, my pleas fell on deaf ears," he said.

Posavec said his goal was to bring new values into Croatian politics and fight for a better future. For the moment, he was not specific about his political future after his term as county chief expires, but stressed that he was not going to join any other party.
