The status of the Croat diaspora community was the focus of discussions at the second and final day of the 4th session of the second convocation of the Government Council for Croats outside Croatia.

According to the State Office for Croats Abroad, more than 3 million Croats live beyond Croatia's borders - many of whom do not have Croatian citizenship. Recent legal amendments should help solve that and other problems faced by diaspora communities.

Zvonko Milas, state secretary of the Central State Office for Croats Abroad, said he believed that resolving the citizenship issue "would lay the foundation for all the other connections diaspora communities have with the Republic of Croatia."

Milas said it would also help with regards to the possibility of voting - an issue that is important to the Croat communities outside Croatia.

Also, a conference was held in Split for the launch of a four-volume book written by longtime Bosnian Croat politician Dragan Čović that details the political, economic, and diplomatic plight of the Croat people in Bosnia and Herzegovina since 1998.

"Included in this book are excerpts from all the speeches I gave during those 20 years. Our goal has always been to ensure the legitimate political representation for all constituent peoples at all levels of government through electoral legislation and the constitution of Bosnia and Herzegovina," said Čović.

Foreign Minister Gordan Grlić Radman repeated Croatia's commitment to integrating the country in Euro-Atlantic institutions, and ensuring the equal status of Croats as one of the three constituent peoples.

"We confirmed yesterday with the resolution on the position of the Croat people passed by the Croatian National Assembly in Mostar, that the election law needs to be changed in order for Croats to be legitimately represented at all levels of government," said the minister.
