In the 2nd round of play in the 2nd stage of the 2021 World Men's Handball Championships in Egypt Croatia lost to Argentina 23:19 on Saturday evening.
Croatia started the match extremely poorly, especially on offense, allowing Argentina to open up a 5:0 lead. Ivan Ćupić scored Croatia’s first goal after 10 and a half minutes of play. However, by halftime, coach Lino Červar’s team managed to level the score at 12:12. By the time they went on holiday, Croatia managed to equalize at 12-12. However, they showed little promise in the second half, allowing Argentina to control every aspect of the game.
Croatia thus remained at five points, one less than Group II leaders Denmark, which has a game in hand, and second placed Argentina. Qatar, which beat Bahrain 28-23 in the first match of the day, while Japan and Bahrain are at the bottom of the standings with one and zero points respectively.
The loss means that Croatia has seriously complicated their road to the quarterfinals. Croatia plays Denmark on Monday. Coach Lino Červar's team will need to win to advance to the quarterfinals.
