It has been announced for years that, one day, rail travel in Croatia will be fast and comfortable. Croatian Railways is initiating the purchase of twenty-one electric trains for 300 million kuna, which will be mostly financed with European money.
The new modern trains will soon be on our rails. Their construction will start soon, and they should all be delivered by the end of 2023. The leader of Croatian Railways has announced a faster and more comfortable ride.
“All these trains are high comfort, air-conditioned, there are ramps for safe entry and exit of people in wheelchairs, and there will be free internet access,” said Željko Ukić, the President of the Management Board of Croatian Railways Passenger Traffic.
Trains in regional transport will have 400 seats, and those in urban-suburban transport more than 500. The Minister announced new projects and pointed out that in the coming period, railways will be a transport priority.
“We could not build highways, ports and railways at the same time, but this is now a decade of railways and mostly large investments in transport infrastructure, since we have completed airports, will be concentrated on railways,” said Minister of Maritime, Transport and Infrastructure Oleg Butković.
Investment in railways is strongly supported by the European Union, 85% of the funds for procurement come from Brussels, while the rest will be provided from the state budget. The new trains will result in lower costs, more lines and less environmental pollution. Minister of Regional Development and EU Funds Nataša Tramišak pointed out the harmonization with the EU's green policies, but also with the priorities of a smarter Europe, where new smarter systems are being discussed.
The 21 new trains will be built by the domestic Končar Electric Vehicles Company, which was the only bidder in the tender.
