In 2019 the national air carrier was setting records, as were domestic airports, in the most successful tourist season to date.
The national air carrier, Croatia Airlines, has announced losses of 173 million Kuna in the first six months of the year. On a year-to-year basis, this is almost double what its losses were in 2019, when they stood at 89 million Kuna. In terms of passenger transport in the first six months Croatia Airlines has transported 630 thousand less than last year. Due to the coronavirus Croatia Airlines is currently limited to 14 European destinations and five Croatian airports.
The first weekend in August is traditionally one of the biggest weekends for the turnover of tourists in Croatia. And while the tourism sector has been hit hard by the coronavirus lockdown, there was still some congestion at border crossings, airports and roads leading to and from the coast on Friday. Much heavier traffic is expected on Saturday and Sunday.
