The fires raging across Europe have already destroyed more land that all the fires last year, according to the European Forest Fire Information System.

The fire that spread to Slovenia from Italy has escalated again. According to reports, the fire in Western Slovenia's Kras region has now crossed back into Italy. Some 900 firefighters and 100 members of other services are on the ground, as well as helicopters, including one sent by Croatia, and a military plane. Firefighters are concerned because winds are expected to rise.

The European Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčić says this summer is going to be particularly challenging.

"It all looks like this is the result of climate change. While here and there we may have a year that is not as bad, the trends are unmistakable. We have an increased frequency and intensity of forest fires, if we look at the average over the years," Lenarčić said.
