Croatian Foreign and European Affairs Minister Gordan Grlić Radman said on Wednesday that election cycles in the United States should not take precedence over Croatia's relations with the country, describing those ties as partnerships between allies.

“Of course, election cycles cannot be above our relations, which are based on an alliance and partnership,” Grlić Radman told reporters ahead of a session of the Presidency and National Committee of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), responding to a question about the US midterm elections.

Democrats won majorities in both houses of Congress on Tuesday, in a result widely seen as a rebuke by voters of President Donald Trump's policies. These include tariffs, which, alongside the war with Iran, have been cited as factors contributing to persistent inflation.

Saying that American voters had “voted as they voted,” Grlić Radman stressed that Croatia's cooperation with the United States was primarily focused on security, defense, the economy and energy.

“And that is how we will continue. We will see what happens,” he said, adding that he would continue to monitor developments in the United States.

Asked whether he expected changes in US foreign policy, Grlić Radman noted that “President Trump still has an ongoing mandate.”
