Croatia strongly condemned the indictment of the People's Republic of Donetsk against Croatian citizen Vjekoslav Prebeg, detained in that self-proclaimed republic, the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs announced on Wednesday.

Croatia rejects the indictment and does not consider it well-founded and legal, because it is against international law and international conventions on the treatment of captured civilians and prisoners of war, according to the Ministry’s statement.

The Ministry and competent services are in constant contact with the Ukrainian authorities and other partners in order to shed light on the case and secure the release of Vjekoslav Prebeg, it was announced. The statement added that the services are in constant contact with the family of the detainee.

According to Croatian media, Prebeg was arrested in May near Mariupol. He is accused of training for terrorist activities, participating in the conflict as a mercenary, and violently taking power and subverting constitutional order.
