The European Parliament passed a resolution today to mitigate and assist Croatia after the earthquake December 29th earthquake that hit the Banovina area. 683 deputies voted, and the resolution was adopted with 677 votes "for" and five "against".

The resolution was discussed at the suggestion of Croatian members of European Parliament. In order to rebuild the area of Sisak, Petrinja and Glina, but also Zagreb as soon as possible after the earthquake - the help of the European Union is needed.

Speaking for Croatian Television from Brussels, Jasna Paro said that the debate and the resolution itself are an expression of a very strong political message from the European legislature.

“The basic message is that Croatia is not alone in trouble, that there is care, solidarity and readiness on the part of all member states to help. The European Parliament called on the European Commission to help Croatia from all available financial funds and to help it quickly and immediately. Secondly, the European Parliament called on the European Commission to reduce administrative burdens and to extend the deadline for the use of funds from the Solidarity Fund, which is currently only 18 months. Third, the European Parliament warned of the possible unintended demographic consequences of emigration by the population and therefore called, not only for quality reconstruction of houses, but also for a comprehensive revitalization of the region in order for the population to remain. Last but not least, the European Parliament called for people from the affected areas, volunteers and workers who help them to be given priority in vaccination against Covid 19. In this context, the EP also welcomed the decisions of member states to send additional vaccines to earthquake-prone areas in Croatia,” said Paro.
