The European Union is considering a sixth round of sanctions against Russia over the invasion of Ukraine.

The European Commission said on Monday that talks with member states on more sanctions against Russia were confidential. The EU's goal is to maintain unity, show solidarity with Ukraine, and to ensure sanctions are effective, said Commission spokeswoman Dana Spinant.

"Our methodology is solidarity, unity, and efficiency. We are working with all member states to ensure that we come up with the most effective sanctions that we can implement as swiftly as possible,” said Spinant.

There are major differences between individual member states on the severity of the sanctions that the EU should impose. On the one hand, the Baltic countries and Poland are taking the toughest position, demanding a stop to all imports of energy from Russia. Hungary, Austria and Germany are opposed.
