Prime Minister Andrej Plenković made an unannounced visit on Sunday to Kyiv, where he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and other top officials.

“We highly appreciate the resilience and resistance of the Ukrainian nation. We highly respect the heroism of Ukrainian soldiers defending their homes, their territory, and their motherland. In that respect, Croatia has consistently supported Ukraine in political, diplomatic, financial, humanitarian, and technical terms. And we shall continue to do that with the clear convictions that we are doing this a country that is determined to be on the right side of history,” said Prime Minister Plenković.

He also said he wanted to send a symbolic message on Victory Day in Europe that Croatia would continue to support Ukraine on its path to membership in the European Union.

“Croatia has been an advocate in supporting your application for membership. We are pleased that you have so quickly answered the questionnaire on political aspects that the Commission has forwarded to you. And we shall be by your side at the next debates on this issue at the European Council," Plenković said.

President Zelenskiy thanked the Croatian people and their government for their support since the beginning of Russia's invasion of his country.

"We hope that the sanctions will pay off and that Russia will stop this brutal attack on our country, our people. We are sincerely grateful to Croatia for supporting all six rounds of EU sanctions against Russia,” said Zelenskiy.

The Prime Minister was met by Croatia's Ambassador to Ukraine Anica Đamić, who has returned to Kyiv after spending weeks assisting in relief efforts in various parts of the country. In Kyiv, she will continue to head the Croatian Embassy, Plenković said.

Pleknović was accompanied by Foreign and European Affairs Minister Gordan Grlić Radman.
