Council of Europe foreign ministers, meeting in Turin Italy on Friday, again condemned Russia's invasion of Ukraine and called on an immediate end to Russia's aggression and a withdrawal of occupying forces.

Secretary General Marija Pejčinović Burić warned that in recent years the values of the organization had come under sustained attack from extreme populists and nationalists. That ideology can be directly linked to the terrible things that have happened in Bucha, Kharkiv and Mariupol, she said.

"What could be more substantial than building peace in a ravaged Europe and supporting our member Ukraine? What could be more important than making sure that all of our continent, including the EU, abides by our Convention on Human Rights or supporting those directly exposed to Russia's aggression in their European integration processes,” Pejčinović Burić said.

Russia has been expelled from the organization over the invasion.

“Ministers reiterated their full support to and solidarity with Ukraine and its unwavering commitment to the independence, sovereignty and respect for the territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders,” the organization said on its website.

The Council of Europe adopted three recommendations with respect to the crisis in Ukraine that address the protection of migrant, refugee, and asylum-seeking women, combating hate speech, and the role of culture, cultural heritage and landscape in addressing global challenges.
