Chile has elected a new president, Gabriel Borić, a young progressive with Croatian roots.

Borić won 56% of the votes, defeating conservative candidate Jose Antonio Kast, who trailed with 44%. His opponent conceded only 90 minutes after polls closed.

The 35-year-old has promised to reduce income inequality, expand social rights, and reform Chile's pension and healthcare systems. He's also pledged to boost green investment. The inauguration is scheduled for March 11, 2022.

Borić's ties to Croatia run through his great-grandfather Ivo, who left the island of Ugljan for Chile in search of gold. Borić is a former member of the Chilean House of Representatives and rose up the political ladder from student leader to presidential candidate, and ultimately president.
