Austrian Airlines is ending its long-running service between Vienna and Zagreb after more than four decades, with the final flight scheduled for January 10, 2027.
According to EX-YU Aviation News, the Star Alliance member has confirmed that it will not resume the route for the summer 2027 season.
The withdrawal comes as Zagreb International Airport faces several months of declining passenger numbers and modest annual growth, with it still unclear whether the airport will maintain an increase by the end of the year.
The loss of Austrian Airlines is significant because the carrier has offered more than a direct connection between the Croatian and Austrian capitals. Its Vienna hub has also provided passengers with convenient connections to destinations across Europe and overseas.
Traditional full-service airlines play an important role in airport connectivity, linking local markets to wider international networks. These connections are particularly valuable for business travellers and passengers travelling to long-haul destinations.
The route's closure therefore represents more than the loss of a direct flight. It also reduces Zagreb's access to a major European hub.
Meanwhile, Croatia remains an important market for Austrian Airlines. The carrier has continued to expand its seasonal services to coastal airports in Zadar, Split and Dubrovnik, where it operates during the summer timetable.
