Croatia and Argentina could further strengthen their cooperation in agriculture, with successful Argentine businesspeople of Croatian descent playing an important role in that process. During a visit to an agricultural research institute in Argentina's Córdoba Province, Croatian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries David Vlajčić learned about modern technologies and production methods that could also benefit Croatian farmers.

He singled out Nicolás Bronzovich, a prominent figure in Argentina's agricultural sector of Croatian descent, who hopes to bring the experience and knowledge he has gained in Argentina to the homeland of his ancestors.

Argentine Croats Want to Share Their Expertise with Croatia

During their visit to Argentina, a Croatian delegation led by Minister David Vlajčić, accompanied by the Glas Hrvatske team, toured an agricultural research institute and learned about the work of its experts and the potential application of their experience in Croatian agriculture.

The minister expressed great satisfaction with the visit, noting that Argentina is one of the world's leading producers of grain, milk and meat.

"The visit to our diaspora has been extremely productive. We took the opportunity to see how agricultural production works in Argentina and what lessons we could apply in Croatia," Vlajčić said.

He particularly emphasised the importance of bringing together scientific research, technology and agricultural producers, an approach that has been an integral part of Argentina's well-established agricultural system for decades.

Wheat Yields Range from Two to Seven Tonnes on the Same Field

One of the highlights of the visit was a tour of experimental fields, where Argentine scientists demonstrate how modern farming techniques can significantly increase agricultural yields.

The minister pointed to an example involving three adjacent wheat plots managed using different cultivation methods.

The plot without irrigation produces around two tonnes per hectare, while the irrigated plot yields approximately four tonnes. On the third plot, where irrigation is combined with the application of farmyard manure, yields are expected to reach as much as seven tonnes per hectare.

"Here, on a single field, you can see the difference that applying knowledge can make. This is precisely what they are putting into practice, working alongside farmers' associations. They are very well organised, and this is something we could bring back home," Vlajčić stressed.

He noted that the Argentine institute works closely with agricultural associations, chambers of commerce and researchers, ensuring that scientific findings are directly applied in everyday farming operations.

Croatia and Argentina Preparing International Cooperation Agreement

The visit could also pave the way for a concrete framework for international cooperation.

Following a bilateral meeting with the Minister of Agriculture of Argentina's Córdoba Province and representatives of the local institute, the parties agreed to launch an initiative to conclude a formal international cooperation agreement.

According to Vlajčić, the initiative is expected to come from the Argentine side. Its aim would be to facilitate the exchange of knowledge, expertise and technology, while strengthening ties between agricultural institutions and producers in the two countries.

"Everything we talk about and seek to promote through our policies is already being put into practice here. Their focus on knowledge, education, farmers' associations, joint market activities and investment in resilience is an excellent example," the minister said.

Nicolás Bronzovich: Croatian Roots at the Heart of Argentina's Agricultural Sector

Nicolás Bronzovich, a prominent Argentine businessman of Croatian descent, featured prominently in the discussions. His strong ties to Croatia could provide an important impetus for future cooperation.

The minister stressed that people like Bronzovich demonstrate how much the Croatian diaspora can contribute to the development of their ancestral homeland.

"Some of the leading figures in Argentine agriculture, including Mr Nicolás Bronzovich, are of Croatian descent. They are genuinely keen to bring to Croatia what they have built here," Vlajčić said.

He added that the discussions had also opened up opportunities for business investment and closer ties between Croatian and Argentine companies.

Argentine Businesspeople Also Interested in the Port of Rijeka

Beyond agricultural production, Argentine businesspeople of Croatian descent have expressed interest in investing in Croatia, particularly in the Port of Rijeka, Croatian companies and domestic products.

During the meetings, the minister also presented Croatia's food industry, highlighting the country's 54 products with protected status under European Union quality schemes.

"Wherever I go, I talk about Croatia's 54 protected products," Vlajčić said, stressing that food could be another important way of strengthening the ties between the diaspora and its homeland.

If They Cannot Return to Croatia, Let Croatia Find Its Way to Their Tables

Beyond the economic dimension, meetings with Argentine Croats also carried a strong emotional significance.

The minister highlighted the pride that descendants of Croatian emigrants take in their heritage, noting that their connection to Croatia remains strong even after several generations in South America.

Even when returning to their ancestral homeland is not part of their plans, Croatian products, traditions and cuisine can remain part of their everyday lives.

"They are extremely proud of their Croatian roots, and that makes us very happy. We should encourage them to bring Croatian food to their tables whenever they have the opportunity," Vlajčić said.

The visit to the Argentine agricultural research institute has thus opened up new possibilities for cooperation between Croatia and Argentina. It has also once again demonstrated the important role the Croatian diaspora can play in exchanging expertise, developing business ties and creating new opportunities for the homeland.
