Zagreb Advent will traditionally start this year with the lighting of the first Advent candle at Manduševac and seasonal lights on Zrinjevac on Saturday, November 27. The motif of this year’s Advent is traditional Croatian toys, and special emphasis is placed on cultural and musical events. The program will run until January 7.

“I am really glad that Zagreb Advent is again receiving such great interest, and I really hope that regardless of the situation with the coronavirus pandemic we will be able to enjoy the numerous programs we have prepared for this year with our partners,” said Martina Bienenfeld, director of the Tourist Board of the City of Zagreb.

It was announced that due to the uncertainty brought by the epidemiological situation, part of the program was transferred to virtual platforms.

“We try to disperse the guests a little so that they do not gather in one location, so that the caterers on their terraces will be able to offer everything they think they should offer in the Advent season. The event will change its offer every week to make it as diverse as possible,” explained Jacqueline Troskot, the President of the Independent Association of Caterers.

Theme for this year - toys and a return to childhood

In addition to concerts and performances, 15 locations in the Upper and Lower Towns will be arranged. This year, there will be no skating rink on the Tomislav Square, but sculptures of skaters will be placed to remind of past Advents when the skating rink celebrated Zagreb's Advent and became one of its trademarks. The Grič tunnel will also not be decorated as in previous years. For the first time this year, the Mažuranić Square will be decorated.

In cooperation with Croatian designers, traditional Croatian toys were selected as decorations that will be located at several locations in the center of Zagreb, and the Zagreb Tourist Board hopes that this will inspire visitors to support Croatian craftsmen and artists and give toys as gifts that they produced for this occasion to the loved ones.

Opening day

“This year, Advent begins on November 27, traditionally with the lighting of the first Advent candle at 5 pm with a special opening program. At 7 pm, if epidemiological measures allow, we will turn on the lights on Zrinjevac, from where Zagreb Advent actually started in 2010,” said Bienenfeld.
