Traffic was heavy all day Saturday to and from the coast on this second weekend in August, which is typically the peak of the tourism season.

More than 100 thousand vehicles passed through the toll booths on the A1 highway at Lučko from Friday to Saturday afternoon. There was congestion coming onto the A1 since early this morning, causing frustration with some travelers.

"It's a disaster! It's too crowded," a driver coming from Austria told HRT.

There was also congestion on the A2, between Zagreb and the border with Slovenia at Macelj. The wait there to enter Slovenia was up to 3 hours earlier on Saturday.

The ferry port in Split also saw large crowds. Ferry operator Jadrolinija said it expected to see around 80 thousand passengers and 18 thousand vehicles this weekend. The company added an extra ferry to Brač and Hvar to meet demand.

Split airport has surpassed 750 thousand passengers for the year, which is quite good considering it is still a pandemic year. The airport has more than 60 direct international flights per week.

"The peak of the season is still going. We can report that we had more than 200 thousand passengers over the past two weeks," said Mate Melvan, the head of Passenger Reception at Split Airport.

The Croatian Auto Club is warning drivers to take extra precautions to cope with heavy traffic, high temperatures, and humidity while on the road.
