The clinical hospital in Split reached a grim milestone on Friday: 15 COVID-19 patients died in the past 24 hours.

The hospital's chief infectious diseases specialist, Dr. Ivo Ivić, says the past week has been of the most difficult of the pandemic and one of the worst in his career. He voiced frustration over the fact that many of the patients who died were older and unvaccinated.

"It is impossible to comprehend. This is an older generation that in the past dutifully took vaccines and did not question the advice of medical professionals and science. Now that is not the case. It seems that social media has played a role in this as did everyone who questioned the efficacy of the vaccines and downplayed the dangers of the coronavirus," said Dr. Ivić.

He places the blame for Friday's high death toll on vaccine refusal and says the deaths were preventable.
