A Korčula community is mourning the death of three young men who died in car crash on Saturday night.

The cause of the accident was a combination of a sharp curve in the road, slippery conditions, and speeding. None of the men in the vehicle were wearing seat belts. The driver was not under the influence of alcohol, police said.

The district of Smokvica has declared seven days of mourning for the young men.

"The accident occurred when the 19-year-old driver of the vehicle travelling from Blato to Vela Luka lost control of the car, skidded off the road and hit a tree. He was killed instantly,” said Andrijana Biskup, a spokesperson for the Dubrovnik-Neretva County Police Department. Biskup added that the two passengers in the car, ages 22 and 24, also died at the scene.

Locals told HRT the section of road where the accident took place has caused problems. Drivers tend to drive above the speed limit and hit the curve going too fast. None of the earlier crashes there had been fatal.

“People have had accidents on this curve in the road before but never with this kind of outcome,” a local man told HRT.
