Today Croatia saw the most deaths in one day since the beginning of the coronavirus epidemic - 32 people have died. As usual on Monday, a smaller number of people have tested positive for the coronavirus - 1,165 in the last 24 hours, from 5,115 samples that were tested.
The City of Zagreb has 922 new cases of the infection, and from tomorrow, so-called "fast" antigenic tests for coronavirus will be in use, which should help in the faster detection of those infected.
Thirty-two patients died from the effects of the coronavirus. The number of patients in hospitals is growing, there are now 1,127, and 94 of them are on respirators.
“If many people get infected, and currently there are around 100,009 to 150,000 people infected, unfortunately many people will die,” warned Gordan Lauc a member of the Government Scientific Council.
The City of Zagreb has 922 new cases of infection. More than 90% of the samples tested are positive.
“There were 966 tests and 922 newly infected people tested positive. We now have 4,342 active cases in the city of Zagreb,” said the Director of the Institute of Public Health, Zvonimir Šostar.
From tomorrow in Zagreb, testing with so-called fast, "antigen" tests will begin. Marija Bubaš, the assistant director of the Croatian Institute of Public Health explained at which locations:
“I call upon people that have symptoms to come to the upper three locations Mirogoj and Rokefeller streets, because quick antigen tests will be conducted there, meaning exclusively for people with symptoms. At the Zagreb Fairgrounds location people mainly come without symptoms and who need to specifically do a PCR test, the reason being hospitalization, crossing the border or some other purpose,” said Bubaš.
The "Andrija Štampar" Institute of Public Health is starting to procure fast, but highly sensitive tests for coronavirus, announced director Šostar.
“We are now in the process of validating one of the best tests in the world, which has a sensitivity of somewhere above 96%. This week we will definitely begin acquisition of these tests, these are South Korean tests,” said Šostar.
There was a big jump in the number of newly infected in Varaždin County - 191 cases. The head of the County headquarters, Robert Vugrin, warned of hospital capacities being filled and noted that 2,000 people are in self isolation.
“Ten percent of them will surely have a need for hospitalization. We will definitely have more than 100 infected patients in the Varaždin general hospital,” said Vugrin.
Many parents are worried about the large number of isolated school children - about 8,000, and fear that children may bring the infection into households. Minister of Science and Education Radovan Fuchs says the number of positive children is 0.3 percent.
“Schools and Principals are often more cautious so to say, so that entire classes end up in self-isolation. That is why we have so many children in self-isolation and a relatively small number of children that test positive,” said Fuchs explaining the large number of students in isolation.
According to data reported by the various county headquarters - Zagreb County has 288 new cases, Brod-Posavina County 118, Vukovar-Srijem County 69, Split Dalmatia County 68 and Bjelovar-Bilogora County 50. Other counties have reported less than 50 new cases.
