Coastal parts of the country, especially the northern Adriatic, have been hammered by heavy rains and strong winds over the past 48 hours. The focal point of the rain runs from the northern coast down to central Dalmatia.

Basements throughout the northern and central coast have been flooded as well as waterfronts on coastal cities. The flooding was especially pronounced in the waterfronts in Šibenik and Vodice.

"Water is pouring into basements, and the water level will rise by another half a meter," said Ratko Đaleta from Šibenik.

"It's blowing a lot and it looks like this is one of the strongest storms of the past decade. Trying to do something in these conditions is futile, because the sea will continue to rise. That's the weather we're getting. Apparently it's warming. The world is coming to an end and that's that," added Ante Bosotin from Vodice.

On the Istrian peninsula strong winds and rain have flooded the waterfronts in Pula and Rovinj, while roads along the Mirna River have been closed to traffic due to flooding. Emergency services are working to drain the excess water.

Throughout the coast a number of ferry lines have been cancelled. Danijela Ivanović from Jadrolinija's Split office: "The ships can't put to sea right now. We're hoping that the weather will calm down this afternoon, and more son tomorrow. So, that the ferry lines can resume their lines tomorrow. As for the catamarans, we'll keep a close eye on the weather and the sea conditions, and we'll see."
