Torrential rain caused serious problems in several counties on Friday.

The Kvarner area was particularly hard-hit. The storm caused a major flood in Novi Vinodolski. Roads were under water and traffic was disrupted, even suspended, in some parts of the town. Although the water has receded, it has left a lot of damage in its wake.

"First, it flooded the industrial zone, then shops, now some homes have been affected in the Mikulje area,” said Vesna Đurić of the local Red Cross in Novi Vinodolski.

About twenty people were evacuated from two shopping centers and nearby homes. Several people had to be rescued from vehicles swept up in the surge.

Krk also struggled with the effects of heavy rain overnight and this morning. Malinska was flooded after getting more than 100 liters of rain per square meter in just twelve hours. The water drained from the hillier parts of town to the center, flooding homes and businesses.

The head of Malinska Municipality, Robet Kranjić, urged drivers to stay home.

"I am urging people not to drive around. There are lot of broken storm drains and potholes. I just learned that the water has washed out all the asphalt in one street. There's a lot of damage. Homes, businesses, a day care center, the Church of St. Nicholas, and the farmers market, all are flooded,” Kranjić told HRT.

With more rain in the forecast, the entire north coast is bracing for more flooding.
